CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE

We were on the Marlborough Sounds in the Picton Mail Boat (blog to come later) when we heard there had been another quake in Christschurch. We were at sea for 4 hours and out of mobile phone contact and so did not realise either the extent of the disaster or that many of you were trying to contact us.
We had been booked into 3 nights in Christchurch 3 days later but it soon became clear that this would not be possible. Neither would we be able to take the Tranzalpine rail trip we'd booked for next Saturday: damage caused to the line has resulted in the service being suspended until 1 March. So we have rearranged our schedule to leave out the city and the area around it.
TV coverage, as you would expect, has been wall-to-wall. We have seen military and rescue vehicles heading south, queues at petrol stations and empty shelves in supermarkets as people panic-bought. We are currently in Kaikoura, about 100 miles north of the city, and local residents have told us there were very many people on the highway last night heading north.
We are safe so please don't worry.
