12th Jan 2011: MAN MO TEMPLE, FOOD MARKETS AND THE RACES

Steve really suffering from jet-lag today: in local Chinese cafe at 7a.m. having breakfast! Sue sensibly back in bed at the hotel.

MAN MO TEMPLE:
Largest temple so far, right in centre of street-trader area in Central Hong Kong.
Only saw sign requesting no photos or videos when the deed was done!

See incense coils hanging from ceiling

FOOD MARKETS:
Steve didn't last too long in here, making a hasty exit looking very green all of a sudden.

Is that really a goats head??

What do you fancy for dinner tonight???

HAPPY VALLEY RACES:
A race-course in the middle of the city of Hong Kong??? You must be mad to even think of building one.

Our first trip by tram. No wonder it's packed with a flat-fare of HK$2 (about 10p). Tram etiquette seems to be to go upstairs and start making your way to the exit straightaway. God knows what happens if one breaks down as there are loads of trams back-to-back at every interchange.

You wouldn't go to Happy Valley for the quality of the horse-flesh, but for the atmosphere, and the money that passes hands.
'Quinella': how to bet in Hong Kong. You wager on the first 4 horses in the race, regardless of placings. Weird!!
Can't see anything on far side of course so giant screens show you what's happening.
Full of ex-pats.

Races start at 7p.m.: dinner-time!
Look what I rustled up!!!

What is it???

YUM!!
