The MTR to Tung Chung goes there via Hong Kong Disneyland (no-one seeemed to be getting on or off here), then it's a 25 minute cable car ride.
Here we go 25 mins in the air!! |
All a bit scary |
Buddha now in sight |
We have landed and still see the Buddha |
Tacky souvenir street: tourist capitalism Hong Kong style |
What we and thousands of others come to see.
Massive in size and interestingly only built in 1992.
' Political and propaganda value rather than devotional?' Discuss. (Essays guaranteed NOT to be marked.)
The Buddha is 250 tonnes the weight of a jumbo jet and similar in size |
280 steps to see the Buddha |
Rear of Buddha |
One of a circle of small Buddha's at the base of the statue |
PO LIN MONASTERY:
Disappointingly there were no Buddhist monks to see.
TAI O:
Took the bus to this small fishing village which is famed for keeping alive many of the local traditions.
As soon as we stepped off the bus a man appeared offering us a 20 minute trip around the bay in his boat for all of HK$20 each. A fantastic way to see all the back-ways and alleys.
Sue actually got into this small boat without panicing .
The boat went round the village built on stilts. (Ironically the glossy adverts in the metro stations for Hilton Resorts on mainland China feature luxury stilt accomodation.)
This is actually a restaurant!! |
This was being decorated for the Chinese new year!!
The video that we took shows the sheer scale of this village, but will have to wait until I can convert Mini DV tapes to a hard drive file!!! Help if know!!
And, of course, there was a market.
Dried Fish |
Live Fish |
