Stanley

South east on Hong Kong Island. We followed the guide book to go by bus: BIG mistake as we couldn't find a bus that would stop for us so we gave up, bad-temperedly, and resorted to metro to Central to pick up bus there. But eventually we got to Stanley on top of double-decker bus. Real roller-coaster ride round the mountains.
Nice coves on the way - lots of people in summer - record of 17,000 on small beach.  Luckily we are here in the winter - 13 to 18C.

PRISON MUSEUM
Good place to start any visit. Shown around by exNYPD cop who is retired in Stanley.
Mock Gallows

Stalls for flogging convicts in 19th century

Prisoners with boards displaying their crimes.

Apparently are 29 prisons, and 39 museums, in Hong Kong.

STANLEY MARKET

Probably what most people come to Stanley for.
That says it all!

Unfortunately these souveirs were too large for our luggage so we bought a small one. Dont know why the heads come seperately - answers please??

STANLEY  TEMPLES
There's an amazing number of temples. This is the first we saw. Much incense-burning and bowing. Guide books say it's the Chinese hedging their bets over the after-life... perhaps. Makes you feel embarrassed taking photos but they don't seem to mind at all.

This is the second larger one at Stanley
Below is a shrine in a rock. Fresh fruit and flowers are added daily by workshippers.

STANLEY GEMS
 Blake Pier

Boat yard
Sandy beaches and coves

Our first sighting of a sanpan:

Stanley Plaza at night

AND the 'Pickled Pelican':
A 1980s-type pub serving fish and chips, sausage and mash, Tetleys and Guinness.

Well the beer was Tetleys - thats my excuse
