17/01/2011: HONG KONG CRICKET CLUB

Hong Kong Cricket Club is a few kilometres outside Hong Kong City on the way to Stanley. Coming up to its 160th anniversary later this year, HKCC originally  was in the centre of the city, where a HSBC building is now.It moved to a splendid spot in the hills. As you can see from the photos, it has a range of sports facilities, not least a cricket pitch, and restaurants and bars.

Swimming pool under the netting (to stop the balls hitting people for six)

Roof top tennis court

HKCC is a throw-back to colonial days and you feel that just walking around it. It's a cross between a gentleman's club and a country club. Though its present-day membership is far from all ex-pat., with its British newspapers and beer it could be in the Home Counties.

The walls are covered in memorabilia:

The Australian cricket team of the 1930s.  Not sure we beat them like in 2011.....

But our reason for the visit was to meet up with Mark Wright: the resident Cricket Coach and Steve's nephew..

What a handsome guy.  Happy birthday on the 1st Feb, Mark and thanks for the great lunch.

Unfortunately Shane,  Mark's dad and Steve's brother, is in hospital in London at the moment, recovering from an operation.  We are thinking of him and Sheila and hope they enjoy these pictures.
